The ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of polystyrene foam products, referred to as “takeaway packs” — will officially take effect from January 1, 2027

The Government of Ghana has announced that the nationwide ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of polystyrene foam products — commonly referred to as “Styrofoam” or “takeaway packs” — will officially take effect from January 1, 2027.

The directive forms part of efforts to tackle environmental pollution, improve waste management, and reduce the harmful impact of plastic waste on waterways, drainage systems, and public health.
Businesses, food vendors, manufacturers, importers, and distributors who rely on Styrofoam packaging are expected to begin transitioning to environmentally friendly alternatives ahead of the implementation date.

Environmental advocates have welcomed the move, describing it as a major step toward promoting sustainability and protecting Ghana’s environment for future generations.
