Sad scenes unfolded as cocoa farmers from the Western North Region staged a protest at the COCOBOD Headquarters in Accra, demanding payment for the hard work they have done.

Following a government announcement earlier in February about a decline in global cocoa prices, farmers were informed of a reduction in the producer price of cocoa in Ghana.

The price offered to farmers was reduced from GH₵3,650 to GH₵2,500, a decision many farmers say has severely affected their livelihoods.
The announcement triggered anger among sections of cocoa farmers in the Western North Region, who organized a demonstration to express their dissatisfaction with President John Mahama.
The farmers accused the president John Dramani Mahama of failing to honor promises made to them during 2024 election campaign, saying they felt disappointed and neglected.
Protesters displayed several placards criticizing the decision and calling on the government to at least maintain the previous price of GH₵3,100 that was introduced under former President Nana Akufo-Addo.
On 20th February 2026, the farmers traveled to Accra and gathered at the COCOBOD Head Office to present a petition to the Director of COCOBOD.
However, according to the protesters, they did not receive a satisfactory response or clear explanation from officials.
As a result, many of the farmers spent the night at the COCOBOD Headquarters, hoping the government would reconsider its decision and reinstate the previous cocoa price.
