NDC Primaries: Allegations of Vote-Buying at Ayawaso East Constituency.

NDC Primaries: Allegations of Vote-Buying at Ayawaso East Constituency.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has scheduled a by-election in the Ayawaso East Constituency for 3rd March 2026.

The seat became vacant following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Hon. Mahama Nasar Toure, on 4th January 2026.

In line with its party constitution, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) organized constituency primaries to elect a candidate to contest the by-election on the party’s ticket.

However, allegations of vote-buying have emerged ahead of and during the primaries held on 7th February 2026. Reports indicate that items including 32-inch television sets, bags of rice, cooking oil, clothing, gas cylinders (buta), and other goods were allegedly distributed to delegates in support of Baba Jamal, Ghana’s Ambassador to Nigeria.

Images and videos circulating on social media have raised questions about the source of the funds allegedly used to procure these items, with critics suggesting they were intended to influence delegates’ votes during the primaries.
