Landlords Cannot Lawfully Increase Rent without First securing Approval from the Rent Control Department – Frederick Opoku

Frederick Opoku, the Acting Rent Commissioner at Ghana’s Rent Control Department, has emphasized that landlords cannot lawfully increase rent without first securing approval from the department.

According to him, the law requires landlords to obtain official certification before any rent adjustment is made.

This process ensures that rent increases are fair, justified, and in line with existing regulations designed to protect tenants from arbitrary charges.

The Rent Control Department reviews requests to determine whether the proposed increment is reasonable based on prevailing conditions.

Without this certification, any attempt by a landlord to raise rent is considered unlawful and may be challenged through the appropriate legal channels.
