Ofoase Ayirebi MP Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has challenged the Mahama-led government to clarify who is buying gold from illegal miners, amid GoldBod’s assertion that it does not purchase directly from galamsey operators.
GoldBod maintains that its transactions are conducted strictly through licensed aggregators in line with Act 1140.
However, Oppong Nkrumah says the sharp rise in reported small-scale gold production, despite intensified crackdowns on illegal mining, raises troubling questions.
He argues that if GoldBod is not the end buyer, then authorities must explain where the illegally mined gold is going and who is financing it.
According to him, transparency is crucial to tackling galamsey and ensuring accountability within Ghana’s gold trade and regulatory framework.
