Breach Of Promise To Marry: Court Orders A Businessman To Pay GH200.000 Compensation

The Accra Circuit Court has ordered a 60-year-old businessman to pay GH¢200,000 in damages to a woman after failing to fulfill a long-standing promise to marry her.

According to the case, the pair were in a relationship for about 11 years.

During that time, the woman said she invested her time, money, and emotional support in the relationship based on the businessman’s repeated assurances that he would marry her.

The dispute arose when the businessman tried to evict her from his apartment in East Legon after their relationship deteriorated.

In response, the woman filed a counter-suit, seeking compensation for emotional distress, financial losses, and the social embarrassment she said she suffered.

Presiding judge Justice Sedinam Kwadam ruled that the promise to marry was serious and had significantly influenced the woman to remain in the relationship.

The court therefore found the businessman liable for damages.
In addition to the GH¢200,000 awarded for damages, the court ordered the businessman to pay GH¢20,000 to cover the woman’s legal costs.

The ruling also allows the woman to keep a car given to her during the relationship and to continue living in the East Legon apartment.
