FIFA is reportedly planning to allow domestic leagues to stage one match per season outside their home country, according to The Guardian.
The idea isn’t entirely new. Last year, Barcelona and Villarreal explored playing a La Liga match in Miami, while AC Milan and Como considered hosting a Serie A fixture in Perth. However, both proposals ultimately fell through.
FIFA is now working on a formal protocol that would permit each league to move one top-flight game abroad. Under the proposed system, any request would need approval from the clubs’ national association, their respective confederation, the host country’s football association, and its confederation before being submitted to FIFA for final authorization.
