Main Causes of Divorce in Ghana

These are the highlights of a study that investigated the factors contributing to divorce in Ghana, using a mixed-method approach that includes questionnaires and interviews with divorced individuals, as well as an analysis of court documents. The findings highlight both legal and non-legal reasons for divorce.

Key Findings:
Sample size was – 300
Spread across Greater Accra (65), Ashanti (60), Eastern (35), Central (40), Western (40), Volta (20), Northern (20), Upper East (20).
Males – 132
Females – 168
The primary causes of divorce, as identified by the respondents, include:
1. FINANCIAL PROBLEMS: This was the most frequently cited cause.
– 88 respondents (29.30%) identified financial problems as a primary factor.
– 52.70% of respondents rated financial problems as the leading cause.
2. THIRD PARTY INTRUSION:
– Identified by 52 respondents (17.30%).
– 29% of respondents rated third-party intrusion as a leading cause.

3. INFIDELITY:
– Noted by 44 respondents (14.70%).
– 18.30% of respondents rated infidelity as a significant cause.
Other Factors mainly identified by FEMALES
– Physical and psychological abuse
– Intimacy challenges
– Poor communication
