Sarkodie Recounts Worst Performance After Accidentally Consuming Cannabis-Infused Biscuit
Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has revealed that one of the worst performances of his career came after unknowingly consuming a cannabis-infused biscuit during a trip to the United States.
Speaking to Doreen Avio and Kwame Dadzie on Daybreak Hitz on Hitz FM, the award-winning musician explained that the incident, which occurred while he was touring, left him disoriented and struggling to perform. The interview comes ahead of his annual Rapperholic concert, scheduled for December 25, 2025, at the Grand Arena.
“I got to my hotel and there was a hamper with drinks and biscuits. I took some biscuits when I was hungry, not knowing they contained marijuana. I had never taken marijuana before,” Sarkodie, whose real name is Michael Owusu Addo, recounted.
He added that his manager, Angel Town, had also eaten some of the biscuit, which amplified the effects. “That’s the worst performance I’ve ever had. In my head, all the songs sounded slow,” he admitted. Even his high-energy tracks like U Go Kill Me felt sluggish, and he struggled to gauge distances on stage. Despite the disorientation, he completed the performance.
The experience taught Sarkodie to exercise caution with unfamiliar food and drink while touring internationally, particularly in countries like the United States where cannabis edibles are legal and sometimes included in hospitality packages.
Beyond the incident, Sarkodie reflected on broader challenges as an artist, including health and personal relationships. He admitted that he has not been consistent with medical checkups despite the demands of his career. “Funny enough, every Rapperholic, I wasn’t healthy,” he said, emphasizing the importance of maintaining one’s health.
He also spoke on the impact of fame on friendships, noting that while he has remained true to himself, others’ perceptions have changed over time. “Certain people, no matter that I’ve become Sarkodie, think I cannot be Michael,” he said, referring to his birth name. “This fame thing has caused me to lose a few friends.”
Despite these challenges, Sarkodie remains one of Ghana’s most successful and respected musicians. By sharing vulnerable moments like the cannabis incident, he continues to connect authentically with fans while offering cautionary advice to other artists about being aware of local customs and substances while abroad.
As Rapperholic 2025 approaches, fans can expect a performer who has learned from past experiences and remains at the forefront of African hip hop.
