Repeating Bawumia won’t improve NPP’s chances – Bryan Acheampong

Dr. Bryan Acheampong, a flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has warned against retaining Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections, arguing that it would not significantly improve the party’s electoral prospects.

According to Dr. Acheampong, the NPP’s performance in the 2024 elections shows that repeating the same candidate is unlikely to change the party’s fortunes.

Speaking on Face to Face on Channel One TV on Tuesday, December 23, in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu, he said the outcome of the 2024 polls should serve as a guide for the party’s decisions going forward.

“If you look at the 2024 election results, you cannot repeat a candidate. Not much will change,” he cautioned.

Dr. Acheampong acknowledged that Ghanaians are often willing to forgive political parties for past governance failures but stressed that leadership remains a decisive factor in winning elections.

“Ghanaians will forgive our party for many of the wrongs it committed, just as they forgave the NDC. They will forgive the NPP as well. But we have a candidate challenge that we may not be able to overcome. Leadership inspires hope,” he said.

He urged the NPP to carefully reassess its leadership choices if it hopes to rebuild and return to power in future elections.
